Individual assessment of a person in a care or a nursing establishment, or at home

We carry out a thorough person centred moving and handling assessment, which will include the following;

Risk assessment with advice on control measures to make a scenario safer

Trial of techniques and equipment

Ensuring that carers are happy, competent and trained in the use of equipment and techniques and have received the All Wales manual handling passport training

Provision of a moving and handling plan (also known as a care plan) for carer staff or informal carers to follow

Moving and handling risk assessments

The risk assessment underpins all moving and handling interventions, as it identifies areas that need to be addressed in order to ensure that everyone is safe when a moving and handling task is being carried out. Risk areas will be identified, and control measures put in place while we work out the safest and best way of moving an individual, in line with their needs and wishes.The risk assessment forms the basis of the moving and handling (care) plan

Reviews of existing care packages

In our experience, staff are often too busy 'fire-fighting' and dealing with priority cases, to be able to carry out the  essential review of existing packages of care and moving and handling plans. We can carry out reviews of current handling situations to ensure that the current needs of the individual are being met and that equipment and techniques are correct for the scenario. We will provide an up to date risk assessment and moving and handling plan (care plan).

Right sized care assessment and recommendations

Through careful assessment we advise on right size care packages - that is, ensuring the correct carer-to-person ratio is in place while using the best piece of equipment, in order for both carers and the individual to feel safe and not rushed. This can also have positive cost and time implications.  By keeping up to date with new products and techniques we are able to make complex handling situations safer, and easier for all involved.

'Single handed care' falls under the banner of 'right sized care'; that is, ensuring that the individual is assisted to move in the best way for them and their carer. In our experience people generally prefer fewer people working with them at one time. We can assess a scenario to see if it is possible to reduce the handling plan to one carer (whether paid staff or family member) working with an individual. This is often possible and works really well; however it is important to stress that the emphasis should always be what it the 'right' number of carers and so on some occasions single handed care may not be possible. This is why a thorough assessment is needed.

All Wales manual handling passport training

We provide The All Wales manual handling passport training for care staff to ensure that they are up to date with regulations, and able to safely carry out their moving and handling tasks. We are able to deliver this training to private companies, public sector organisations and direct payment carers.
